Toward Green and Sustainable TVET: A Case Study of a Technical College in Saudi Arabia

Presentation

Local technical and vocational institutions should take an active part in the transition to an eco-city.

Building a green technical college requires the participation of all faculty members, staff members, and trainees. In Saudi Arabia, how to launch a green technical college project is still uncertain. This study proposes an integrated paradigm for a green technical college. This concept is intended to handle all campus activities in a sustainable manner. It tackles all problems associated with a college’s metabolism and guarantees that the perspectives and objectives of all stakeholders are taken into account. To determine its viability, a case study methodology is used.

Due to its distinct departments and data availability, the College of Telecom and Electronics (CTE) was picked. Several CTE initiatives are described in detail, including the implementation of recycling trainees’ exercises, wastewater recycling at the campus level, integrated solid waste management (including the collection of integrated circuits, photon cards, electronic components and substances, and plastic bottles, etc.), green education, and research.

Significant economic, environmental, and social benefits have been realized as a result of these efforts, including more efficient use of materials and energy, cost savings from reduced exercise costs and reduced environmental penalties, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of wastewater discharge and solid wastes, avoidance of toxic materials, increased environmental awareness, enhanced green image, etc.

The accomplishments of the College of Telecom and Electronics have served as a model for other technical and vocational institutions in Saudi Arabia, allowing them to begin projects based on their particular reality. During this process, tight coordination with local government, strong leadership, and a thorough strategy will be required so that all interested parties can participate and additional resources can be acquired to assist its execution
